Can i replace my Pentium Dual-Core Processor Motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo one?
I have a gateway e2140 and it has a intel pentium dual-core processor. I really like the processor and the computer but i just wanna know if it is possible to switch it with an Intel Core 2 duo
Yes, it is possible, but you have several potential issues to address. Since you have a Gateway, chances are some of the components (such as the power supply) may be proprietary to Gateway and may not interface with your new motherboard properly. As such, it may be in your best interests to take the components you do like such as the hard drive, optical drives, etc and just build a new PC from scratch.
By doing this you can minimize the number of problems you may have, and most of the time the components you purchase may be of higher quality. However, if you do decide to just swap out the motherboards and try to connect as much as possible, some considerations to follow:
1) RAM type: ensure your new motherboard accepts the RAM your Gateway currently has. Use a website like www.crucial.com to check what type of memory you have and what speed it is, and make sure the new mobo supports it.
2) Component connections. Check your hard drive to see if it uses a SATA or PATA connection, and make sure your new mobo has an appropriate connection for it. PATA cables are the thick ribbon-like cables with SATA is a group of about 3 wires, and is much more space-efficient.
3) Expansion card connections. Do you have a video card that you are transferring? Check to see what kind of connection it uses (usually PCI Express, but if it is older, probably AGP). Also, if you have any PCI cards you are transferring such as a NIC card or sound card, make sure the new mobo has enough PCI slots.
As you can see, the considerations are numerous in swapping out motherboards, and I just think the potential risks are too numerous. You also run into problems with the physical size of the motherboard and ensuring it fits properly in your case. There's also the consideration for airflow. The new mobo may not attach components in a way that works well with the airflow of your current case.
So in summary, yes, you can swap mobos, but the potential risks and problems really outweigh the benefits. Consider building a new PC from scratch.
