More Laptop Hdd Caddy Results At Bottom Of The Page
Will inserting a 2.5in hard drive straight from one laptop into another have any serious side effects?
there is two dell inspiron 1501's in my house. on of them broke this morning but i would like to get the data off the hard drive and onto my desktop. is it possible to take the HDD out of the broken laptop and put it into the other laptop to get the data, or will the fact the HDD has the OS on it disrupt computer settings etc? Or will it all work smoothly?
Answers are appreciated as it will save me spending £15 on a usb 2.5in HDD caddy.

EDIT: There both the same hardware. But one laptop is running Vista Home Premium. And the the broken one is running Xp Home Edition.

If it's the exact same hardware, it will be fine. If it's not, then the HD might not contain all the device drivers the new hardware needs. Windows comes with a bunch of generic drivers, which may work, however if they don't some of the devices on the new computer will not work. You can always download the drivers from Dell, but if your network driver is missing that could be a challenge. You will need to download the network driver on another machine and transfer it somehow, usually a USB thumb drive is the best way.
