Help deactivating onboard graphics card and activating PCI Express x16 card?
I recently built a computer using an ASUS M4A78LT-M motherboard and an ATI Radeon HD 6790 graphics card. I read the manual for installing the card, plugged it in, and installed the drivers. Unfortunately, for some strange reason, the computer won't activate the card, or even recognize that it's there! I've messed with and checked the BIOS and Control Panel a dozen times trying to make this work, and for some reason, it just won't, so right now I'm stuck with the much less nice onboard card, an ATI Radeon 3000. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem?
I've tried both plugging in the monitor to the GPU and activating from the hardware section of the control panel. The really strange thing is that it's not even registering as being there on the control panel.
Christian, assuming you have everything connected correctly, my suggestion would be to do a clean reinstall of the card. This means removing any programs, files, or registry entries related to ATI (this would include Catalyst Control Center, Display Driver, OpenCL Driver, ATI Integrated Driver, HydraVision, and the AMD Media Codec Package). My experience with ATI software is that it is very order-sensitive, and bad installs can occur easily. Once uninstalled, reboot the system so it will use the internal (processor) graphics. Now physically install your new card (power down first, of course), and once the system comes up and recognizes the new hardware, install the ATI software (preferably the latest Catalyst Software Suite from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx ). Sorry if this seems by-the-numbers rudimentary, but having been through multiple frustrations with ATI graphic card installations, I am only offering what worked in the past for me. Hope this helps. P.S. Have you tried removing the ATI software yet, and doing a clean install? It is an important step to consider, especially if you have previously installed a different ATI device.
